How ICD-10 Will Improve Quality of Care?
The healthcare industry is constantly evolving, and hospitals and other healthcare providers need a clinical coding system that reflects current medical knowledge, technologies and practices to ensure the reliability and validity of our national healthcare data. Replacing the current 30-year-old system with a new, updated clinical and diagnosis coding system is critically important to quality improvement initiatives and research to improve healthcare services for patients. The functionality of the current International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Edition (ICD-9) has been exhausted by efforts to continue to add codes to describe new procedures and diagnoses. The impact of workarounds, such as creating new codes in unrelated sections or chapters, has eroded the hierarchical structure of the ICD-9 procedure code set.
Coronary Artery Bypass Procedures (CABG) in ICD-10-PCS:
Compliance date for the ICD-10 implementation is not a flexible deadline and HHS has no plans to extend the compliance date, so after 5010 the next to be successfully implemented is ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS. With so many changes coming our way, ICD-10 Coders Academy brings to you unique aspects in ICD-10 of various coding scenarios and procedures in every edition of our e-newsletter ICD-10 Insight. In this edition of ICD-10 Insight, we will learn how CABG is coded in ICD-10-PCS. Coronary Artery Bypass Procedures (CABG) in ICD-10-PCS: Coronary artery bypass procedures are one of the many procedure codes that will become more specific in ICD-10 in terms of the materials used for creating the bypass conduit, approach to the procedure, as well as the source or origin of blood to the coronaries.
